Hiring an intern

Hiring an intern. It is the summertime, and most entrepreneurs can use some help with work.  I am no exception.  This year, I hired an intern. This is not as easy of a process as I thought.

You need to make sure that you make the correct hire.  Is this a payable position?  Or is it just a volunteer position.  I do not like volunteers, as they have no investment in your business. My intern is a payable position.

My first mistake was to not set up my expectations.  My intern should not have to ask me what to do today, they should have a list of things to do.  I am finding out that 20’s old, do not plan strategies.  They google it and rewrite what they found.

Set your expectation.  If they are to run a specific part of your organization, then set specific goals.  Check on them daily.  Make sure that everyone is on the same page.  Lastly, remember they are learning.  So take baby steps with them.

While everyone likes to get paid.  Some do not want to make money for your company.  Make sure you tie their pay with the growth of a service or product within your company.  Intern is not another bill or invoice.  It is a position to take somethings off your shoulders.

Good luck and keep grinding.
