Tools of the trade

I have talked about taking the plunge (now what) and joining a tribe (community) in my past podcast.  However, you will need some tools of the trade.  Tools will come in the form of hardware and software.

Hardware

You will need a laptop and desk top computer.  Having a tablet would be nice, but not essential. Some beginners will purchase just a laptop computer, but it is very good to have a desk top to work on projects.  Having a dedicated work space is also essential.  A bonus room.  A basement. A section in your bedroom.  Try to remove distractions, like televisions, radio, or anything which might make you lose focus.

You will need a dedicated phone line.  In the beginning, I would recommend a Google Line.  It is free and can be added to your personal cell phone.  You can also import it to a separate phone with the project fi (google phone system) and keep the same number.

A business address is also essential.  I would not recommend a post office box, but if that is all that is available in your area.  Then it is better than your home address. FedEx and UPS Stores generally offer boxes with street address.  They also have faxing services and notaries.

Business cards is also essential.  Good business cards.  Make sure you have a quality logo, created by a good graphic artist.  Stationary is also essential.  While you might not be sending out letters daily, you will come across the occasion to send a prospect or client a friendly note.

Paper, pens, pencil, desk, folders, desk, comfortable chair,  and filing system are important.  Internet (reliable bandwidth) is essential.

Software

Software will depend on type of business.  You will need to have software that works in conjunction with your every day task.

You will need software to assist you with receiving payments.  There are many good payment systems from Fresh Books (paid service) to wave (free services).  I use deskera.  Deskera has a built in content management system, so I can create flows for prospective and current clients.

You will need project management system.  There are many.  I use Asana.  Good reason to have a project management system is to keep your project on task.  Also it will allow you to stay organized.  There are many project management systems, from Monday to Asana.  Most have a free and paid option.

Last thing to have is a good website.  Make sure you spend time on creating your website or hire an expert.  This is your first impression.  Do not let it be your last one for a prospective client.
